This tour provides an impressive look at the subject “civil defence and bomb war”, a particular aspect of World War 2. This part of history, which many of our parents and grandparents lived through, is particularly important for the younger generation – in order to provide an understanding of the realities of war, as a means to preventing such horror in the future.
First of all we visit Berlin’s most well-preserved bunker from WW2, the Berlin Underworlds Museum. This historical site has been a protected memorial since 1999. With the help of rooms setup to look as they would have then, and many other original artefacts, our guests learn about how these bunkers worked and how people experienced them.
The second part of the tour involves a visit to the ruins of the “Flak” or anti-aircraft tower in the Humboldthain park. With the example of the ruin of this former military and civilian above-ground bunker, our visitors learn about how in the years following the war – as a result of the Potsdam agreements – the majority of the defensive structures in Berlin were destroyed and the the city's rubble was dealt with.
Following this, we take the U-Bahn to Paracelsus-Bad to visit the original hospital bunker on Teichstrasse. Built in 1941, it has been painstakingly restored by our association and open to visitors since 2005. This structure is one of the standard designs, of which hundreds were built as part of the “bunker program for the Reich capital” under the direction of the “General Building Inspector” Albert Speer. During the Cold War, the space was used to store West Berlin’s “senate reserves”.
Sturdy footwear is obligatory (no sandals or flip-flops!) and warm clothing is recommended – the interior temperature is never more than 10°C, even in summer. Safety helmets, provided by the association, have to be worn throughout the duration of the tour.
All participants must be at least 14 years of age, and children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
This tour is only available upon request to groups in English and in some other languages. Please contact us for details.
