Chronicles – The year 2006 Our activities since 1997

On the site of the former Underground Railway Control Centre at U2 Olympiastadion Station, a series of lectures called: “Subterranean Networks”, organized by the “Deutsche Verkehrswissenschaftliche Gesellschaft”, takes place.

Among lectures concerning the “Project U 55 – Advance into the Government District” (Berlin Transport Authorities, BVG) and the “380 kV-Electric Supply Tunnel beneath the City” (Vattenvall), Berlin Underworlds – enregistered society informs about “Blind Tunnels and Ghost stations in Berlin”, about constructional preliminory works and closed tunnel section, beginning with the elevated railway project by Siemens (1881, photo) and ending with the preliminory works of the 1990s beneath Potsdamer Platz.

In the city of Weimar (Thuringia), Dietmar and Ingmar Arnold (Berliner Unterwelten e.V.) are awarded with the “Deutscher Preis für Denkmalschutz 2006” (German National Historic Landmark Preservation Prize) – the most important award in the Federal Republic of Germany in this field. 10 personalities are honoured on the occasion of a ceremonial act in the Weimar City Palace for their volontary commitment to preserve the architectural and archeological heritage. The members of the board of the “Deutsche Nationalkomitee für Denkmalschutz” (German National Committee for the Protection of Historic Monuments) present the “Silberne Halbkugel” to the laureates. The Arnold brothers, founding members of Berliner Unterwelten, accept the prize in the name of the whole membership for their pioneer efforts “in opening up important historic subterranean Berlin installations to the public”.

Zum Abschluß der Führungssaison im Flakturm Humboldthain wird die seit langem vorbereitete Ausstellung zum Thema mit vielen historischen Fotografien und Dokumenten, die wir in den letzten Jahren gesammelt haben, vor Ort durch die Baugruppe installiert. Ab April 2007 wird die Ausstellung dann auch dem interessierten Besucher zur Verfügung stehen.

Das renommierte “Wu-Wei-Theater” (Frankfurt a.M.) ist mit dem Stück “DER JAZZDIRIGENT” erneut Gast im Gesundbrunnen-Bunker (Berliner Unterwelten-Museum). Das Stück von und mit Wolfgang Sréter ist eine Erzählung mit biographischem Hintergrund, die einen interessanten und neuen Ansatz für die Beschäftigung mit dem Thema “Nationalsozialismus” bietet.

Das “dokumentartheater berlin” fährt für eine zweiwöchige Tournee in die Ukraine und auf die Krim. In Sinferopol, Jalta, Sudak und Kiew finden mehrere Theatervorstellungen und Konzerte statt. Zudem erfolgen verschiedene Begegnungen mit ehemaligen Zwangsarbeitern. Abschlußhöhepunkt ist des Aufführung der Bühnenversion des Stückes “Und der Name des Sterns heißt Tschernobyl” im Tschernobyl-Museum in der ukrainischen Hauptstadt.

Die Berliner Rettungshunde-Staffel des Roten Kreuzes trainiert zum zweiten Mal in der Ruine des Flakturm Humboldthain für den Ernstfall. Erneut ist die Übung für die beteiligten Rettungshundeführer ein besonderes Erlebnis.

Zum diesjährigen Tag des Offenen Denkmals mit dem Schwerpunktthema “Rasen, Rosen und Rabatten – Historische Gärten und Parks” begrüßen wir rund 650 Besucher. Neben den traditionell gutbesuchten Führungen durch die LS-Musterstollen Friesenstraße, den OP-Bunker Teichstraße und am Schwerbelastungskörper präsentiert sich der Verein in Zusammenarbeit mit der Kirchengemeinde am Humboldthain mit einer “Open-Air-Ausstellung” und speziellen Führungen, die vor allem die Kriegszerstörungen der Grünanlagen und deren Wiederherstellung in der Nachkriegszeit thematisieren. Allen an der Vorbereitung und Durchführung Beteiligten sei herzlich gedankt!

Die Theatergruppe des Vereins (seit August 2006 “das dokumentartheater berlin”) besucht das Theaterfestival in Martin/Slowakei und bringt das Stück “Tänzerin hinter Stacheldraht”, die Bühnenfassung von “OST-Arbeiter” zur Aufführung.

Der Verein, vertreten durch Dietmar Arnold und Holger Happel, nimmt am “114. Tourismusfrühstück” des Leipzig Tourist Service e.V. in der Leipziger Moritzbastei teil. Auf der Podiumsdiskussion zum Thema: “Moral contra Tourismus – wie weit darf Geschichte erlebbar sein?” stellt Dietmar Arnold einem interessierten Fachpublikum aus der Tourismus- und Museumsbranche die Arbeit des Berliner Unterwelten e.V. vor.

Die Berliner Rettungshunde-Staffel des Roten Kreuzes trainiert in der Ruine des Flakturms Humboldthain. Für Hunde und Retter ist das Angebot des Berliner Unterwelten e.V., die Trümmerhänge im Inneren des Flakturms für eine Übung zu nutzen, ein sehr willkommener Anlaß für neue Trainingsherausforderungen, da sich Rettungshunde schnell an die sonst üblichen Übungsgelände gewöhnen. Im Anschluß bestätigen uns die Hundeführer, dass es sich bei der Trümmerwelt im Inneren des Flakturm Humboldthains um ein wirklich anspruchsvolles Übungsgelände handelt.

Zur 20. Langen Nacht der Museen begrüßen wir 1.452 Gäste im Berliner Unterwelten-Museum. Die stetig wachsende Ausstellung im Berliner Unterwelten-Museum bietet viele neue Exponate und Ausstellungstafeln – unter anderem eine Sende- und Empfangsstation einer historischen Rohrpostanlage sowie unser neues Großexponat, den restaurierten Triebwagenkopf (BII-Triebwagen 132) der Berliner U-Bahn.

Besonderer Dank gilt den Vereinsmitgliedern, die bei der Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Veranstaltung als auch beim abschließenden nächtlichen Aufräumen mitgeholfen haben.

Once again very important visitors at Berlin Underworlds' Museum. Hon. Walter Momper, President of the Berlin House of Representatives, attends with the staff of his office Tour No. 1 “Dark Worlds”. In addition, he signs the guestbook of the Association.

In den Vormittagsstunden besucht Bundespräsident Horst Köhler mit einer Gruppe von Mitarbeitern des Bundespräsidialamtes das Berliner Unterwelten-Museum. Nach Abschluß der 90-minütigen Tour trägt er sich in das Gästebuch des Vereins ein.

Zur Einführung unserer neuen Gruppenführung ”Tour H – Reichsluftschutzschule und Hochbunker Heckeshorn ” geben wir an diesem Wochenende interessierten Einzelbesuchern die Möglichkeit, die spannende Geschichte der ehemaligen Reichsluftschutzschule und des Hochbunkers Heckeshorn hautnah mitzuerleben. Das einmalige Sonderführungsprogramm findet großes Publikumsinteresse.

Der Verein erhält eine Sende- und Empfangsstation einer historischen Rohrpostanlage aus einem Stahlwerk in Duisburg. Der Spender, Herr Bösebeck, hat sie vollfunktionsfähig mit Bremsbogen, elektrischer Weiche, Empfangs- und Senderohr geliefert, wofür wir uns ganz herzlich bedanken.

Die Humboldthain-Bautruppe hat sich wieder Schwergewichtiges vorgenommen. Neben der obligatorischen Schuttbeseitigung, der weiteren Sicherung gefährdeter Bereiche, mehreren kleinen Betonarbeiten und der Freilegung der Galvanisierungsbecken im dritten Erdgeschoss gilt es, spontan 12 Doppel-T-Träger ins Innere zu schaffen. Durch ein freigestemmtes Loch verschwinden diese schließlich zusammen mit einigen Litern Schweiß im Inneren des Turms. Fazit: Nicht alles, was auf dem Plan gestanden hat, ist auch geschafft worden. Nichtsdestotrotz wird reichlich Material befördert. Die Geburtstage von Thomas Petzold und Henry Gidom am Donnerstagabend kommen da gerade recht, um mit ein paar bunkergekühlten Bieren ein kleines Bergfest zu veranstalten.

Durch zweitägigen Einsatz von Mitgliedern der Arbeitsgruppe Bauen/Technik/Ausstellung im Mai und Juli wird in Braunschweig eine Netzersatzanlage, im Volksmund auch Notstromaggregat genannt, aus einer zweigeschossigen Tiefbunkeranlage demontiert, geborgen und nach Berlin gebracht. Bei dem Aggregat handelt es sich um einen ca. 1,5 Tonnen schweren 2-Zylinder-Dieselmotor. Das Gerät ist damit vor der Verschrottung gerettet worden und soll nun die Sammlung technischer Anlagen aus Luftschutzräumen und Bunkeranlagen des Zweiten Weltkriegs in unserer Ausstellung erweitern.

Nach einiger Vorbereitungszeit gehen am Mittwoch, den 5. Juli 2006, die ersten französischen Seiten unserer Homepage online. Hier können sich frankophone Besucher insbesondere über den Inhalt und die Zeiten unser regelmäßigen Führungen und unserer Gruppenführungen informieren. Wir bedanken uns bei Christine Gardon für ihre Übersetzungsarbeit.

At 11.00 am – on time – a bilingual information tableau (German-English) concerning the history of the Fuehrer Bunker is revealed on the historic location. For those visitors from all around the world interested in history, this tableau gives a good chance to find this important site which is burdened with a negative past. By making the area of the former “Fuehrer Bunker” visible, the formation of myths and nostalgic transfigurations shall be made impossible.

The resonance in the mass media is a very positive one. Also, the major international news agencies give reports of these activities.

The “documentary theatre berlin” (formerly known as 'Theatre Unter Welt(en)' workgroup) participates very sucessfully in the “Liverpool International Theatre Festival”. This renowned Non-Professional Festival in Liverpool, Nova Scotia (Canada), takes place already for the eigth time. Our theatre company performs “Dancer behind barbed wires” and is awarded with the following prizes:

• “Outstanding International Production”
• “Best Director”
• “Peoples Choice Award”

Besides “Dancer behind barbed wires” the spectacle ”.... and a star called Chernobyl” is presented in Liverpool. Both performances have been played in English, and they receive a big success with the public.

The participation of the 'documentary theatre berlin” in the “Liverpool International Theatre Festival” has been supported by: Verband Deutscher Amateurtheater e.V. (The Association of German Non-Professional Theatres – Incorporated Society) in cooperation with the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Embassador of Canada in Germany, His Excellency Mr. Paul Dubois. On the occasion of the “Long Night of Sciences”, several members lead about 400 visitors in the time from 6.00 pm. to 11.30 pm into the “AEG Experimental Underground Tunnel” – the oldest of it's kind in Central Europe. Many thanks to all participants for their commitment!

In the context of a radio day: “Aboveground, Celestial, Underground”, the Berlin-based Public Radio station “radioeins” (RBB) produces a live programme from the Berlin Unterworlds' Museum. Several members of the Association and many other distinguished experts participate in the four-hour radio show.

The regular “Wednesday Night Lectures” enjoy a great popularity among our members. They take place on the first wednesday on every month, at the Media Hall within the facilities of the Gesundbrunnen Bunker, at 19.00 hrs.

• April 5th, 2006: “Berlin Underworld – Introduction of the Berlin Murder Squad on the base of historic criminal cases. Part I” by Mr. Wieczorek (Berlin State Office of Criminal Investigation)

Many more lectures about various subterranean topics will be hold in the near future.

The “Humboldthain” workgroup organizes a special tour (for members only) into the Flak Towers at Humboldthain Park which leads down to the lowest platforms. Jan Benndorf, Holger Happel and Jürgen Wedemeyer lead 15 participants into the eternal darkness of the former Battle Tower. For most of them, it is the first descent or even the first visit at all. So, two and a half hours later, they leave the “humid masonry” with lots of impressions.

Resumption of the documentary spectacle “Infernale anonym – Part II”. Mia Kaspari & Company present this show about the roles of women in the Nazi era and in the Second World War until May 2006.

More than 60.000 Berliners & Brandenburgers use this Sunday afternoon for a walk through the modern road tunnel beneath the Tiergarten Park, just one week before the official opening. Six hours is the allocated period of time for the pedestrians to cross this 2.450 metres subterranean thoroughfare between the main entrances at Invalidenstraße (in the North) and Kemperplatz (in the South). Berlin Underworlds' Association is on the ground with a “tent of information”. Many thanks to all participants for their tireless commitment on the rather draughty tunnel ramp!

Approx. 390 Million Euro have been spent in this politically highly disputed project. More than 190.000 cubic metres of concrete have been installed, ca. 60.000 square metres of asphalt shed on the road surface, 650 kilometres of electric cables and 1.085 lamps installed in the tunnels. From now on, 19 escape doors and five emergency escapes take care for the safety of the user.

Preview of the play ”... and the name of the star is Chernobyl”, at the Public Forum of the High School in Nottuln/Westphalia. The members of the non-profit association “Help to Narowlja/Tschernobyl – incorporated society” have invited the Berlin documentary theatre to their home city.

Another part of a spectacular historical documentation concerning the architecture of the former Berlin Government District is presented to the public for the first time at the site of the last remaining historic building at Vossstraße. The World Premiere of Part No. 1 has been taken place in May 2005. The second part is called “Albert Speer's New Reich Chancellery”. Christoph Neubauer, the director of this interactive production, answers to the questions of the interested audience.

'Berlin Underworlds' Association – Incorporated Society' welcomes the 200th member.

Prominent guests from Hollywood at Berlin Underworlds – Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie visit with a small group Tour No. 1 “Dark Worlds”. Mrs. Jolie is very interested in the Underworlds' Museum and the new exhibition about the “Trümmerfrauen” (rubble women), while Mr. Pitt seems to have more eyes for the ruins of the Flak Towers at Humboldthain Park. But both of them are very impressed with the work of our association.

A new record on the occasion of the 19th “Long Night of the Museums”: a total of 2.270 people visit Berlin Underworlds' Museum despite the fact that the museum is not directly connected to the bus shuttle network of the Long Nights! Several lectures, two different short tours, various performances and readings of our theatre group, and a cosy catering service organized by many members of the association, let the visitors stay at the Museum much longer than they initially have had intended to. More than 90% of them visit the Berlin Underworlds' museum for the first time. Many thanks to all our guests for their attendance!

Vernissage of a new exhibition: “Immer DA! Trümmerfrauen und Aufbauhelfer. Einst & Heute.” (Being there forever! Rubbel women and reconstruction workers. Once & today)

By adding a new exhibition about women and men in Post-war Germany, Berlin Underworlds' Associations presents for the first time the remodelled rooms within the facilities of the Gesundbrunnen bunker to the public, in the presence of Mrs. Dagmar Hänisch, City Councilor of Cultural and Educational Affairs (Borough of Berlin-Mitte). Among more than 100 special guests there are 11 contemporary witnesses who speak about their experiences in the times after the war. Enjoying some cold and warm snacks, for instance a bread soup so typical of those days, many guests use the opportunity to contact several former “Trümmerfrauen” and a male “Aufbauhelfer” who attend the vernissage.

In Hamburg, Hamburger Unterwelten e.V. (Hamburg Underworlds – incorporated society) has been established – our partner association in the Elbe metropolis. On February 15th, 2006, this new association is enregistered at the Hamburg District Court and focusses its' activities on guided tours into various subterranean installations. The “Sonderführungen” (Special Tours) workgroup within Berlin Underworlds organizes a special visit to the Pallasstraße Bunker. This shelter was structurally finished by Soviet forced workers between 1944 and 1945. Originally, it was intended to establish here several bomb-proof rooms for the Telecommunication offices at Winterfeldtstraße in Berlin-Schöneberg. During the Cold War, the facility has turned into an air-raid shelter for the civil population (capacity: 4.809 persons). A total of 135 visitors takes this rare opportunitiy to inspect the shelter. Mr. Förster, a teacher from Sophie School High School, informs about the history and the fate of the forced workers – most of them were Soviets. They built the bunker, and their accommodations were located on the campus of the High School. The incomes – 505 € altogether – are donated in favour of the Forced workers' Foundation at Sophie Scholl High School.

There is a new regular information service available on our website. Besides the regular guided tours in English, German and Spanish, and, of course beyond our regularly published flyers in English, German, Spanish and in several other languages, to all those who are interested in Underworlds in General, we have a fundamentally improved range of special discovery tours into various underworlds all over Berlin. Many thanks to our member Silvia Brito Morales for her committment and, especially, for her translations into the Spanish Language!

Take a view back, all year last-above, and Berlin Underworlds' Association thanks more than 60.000 visitors on our facilities – including several special events – and about even more 327.000 guests who visited our websites. On the turn of the year, the association has drawn more than 190 members.
