Workgroup “Gasometer-Bunker” Fichtestrasse Building and technic department

AG Gasometer-Bunker Fichtestraße

The goals of this workgroup include the restoration, documentation and presentation of the history of the Gasometer and bunker at Fichtestrasse 6 in Berlin-Kreuzberg as well as research, preparation of information and support for the association’s tours.

The workgroup “Gasometer-Bunker” Fichtestrasse aims to restore the structure by returning the original technical equipment, cleaning it, etc. in a way that the wide span of the building’s, district’s and city’s history (1883 to present) can be experienced. This should be realized by means of tours and lectures.

Different parts of the building will be devoted to the building’s various uses over time – beginning with the gas supply for the expanding city; through the 1st and 2nd World Wars and the conversion in the 1940s to a bunker; then to the post-war period, when the structure was used in numerous ways, for example as storage for the West Berlin “senate reserves”; and finally through to the present.
