Almost exactly 15 years ago on the 5th of December 1997 the formal incorporation of the Berlin Underworlds in the official register of associations marked the start of an extraordinary success story.
Earlier that year on the 22nd of May, in a typical Berlin courtyard apartment, the association was founded by 7 members with an interest in what lay beneath Berlin.
Today the association has 450 members, employs 135 people and in 2012 alone around 270,000 guests were welcomed to the Berlin Underworld's tours, exhibitions and seminars.
Around 90 association members and their invited guests gathered between the 29th of November and the 1st of December to celebrate the 15th year of the Berliner Unterwelten e. V.
Amongst many highlights celebrated were the bestowal of Germany's highest award for conservation (“Silberne Halbkugel”) on the Association, the visit of Federal President Horst Köhler in 2006 and the visit of our 1,000,000 guest in November 2011.
These and many more events in our Association's 15 year history are detailed in our chronicles.
On the occasion of the Jubilee, a series of events including live music, a buffet and special tours were organised. The festivities concluded on Sunday with a symposium on “Ideas for a network of European Underworlds” featuring participants from 7 Underworlds Associations spread accross 4 European Nations.
